Fire Alarm Installation Bristol — BS 5839:2025 Compliant Systems
New fire alarm installation for businesses across Bristol and the South West. Every system designed, installed and commissioned to BS 5839-1:2025 by Bristol-based engineers — no subcontractors, no call centres, no compromise.
Bristol's Fire Alarm Installation Specialists
A fire alarm system is only as good as its installation. The right detectors in the wrong position, cabling that doesn't meet BS 5839-1:2025, a system designed without reference to the actual risks in your building — these aren't theoretical problems. They're the reasons why fire alarm systems fail when they matter most, and why the responsible person for your Bristol premises carries genuine legal liability for the system installed on their site.
CJS Fire & Security install fire alarm systems for commercial premises across Bristol and the South West. We carry out the full process — site survey, system design, installation, commissioning and certification. Every system fully complies with BS 5839-1:2025 — the current British Standard for fire detection and alarm systems in non-domestic premises, which came into force in April 2025. Every installation is carried out by our own Bristol-based engineers. No subcontractors. No national company managing Bristol accounts from a distant office.
From a small Bristol office needing a straightforward conventional system to a large multi-floor commercial building requiring a fully addressable system with ARC monitoring — we install fire alarms appropriate to the building, the risk and the budget.
How We Install Fire Alarms in Bristol
Every CJS fire alarm installation follows a structured process from first contact to final certification. Here's exactly what happens when you choose CJS Fire & Security to install your Bristol fire alarm system.
Step 1 — Free Site Survey
We visit your Bristol premises and carry out a comprehensive site survey — walking every area of the building, understanding how it's used, identifying the risks specific to your premises and assessing any factors that will affect system design. There's no charge and no obligation. The survey forms the foundation of everything that follows — a system designed without a proper site survey is a system designed for a generic building, not yours.
Step 2 — System Design
Based on the site survey and your fire risk assessment, we design the most appropriate fire alarm system for your building. We specify the system category under BS 5839-1:2025 (L1 through L5 for life protection, P1 or P2 for property protection), the detector types and positions, the manual call point locations, sounder coverage, control panel specification and any integration requirements with other building systems. You receive a clear written design with full documentation as required by BS 5839-1:2025.
Step 3 — Quotation
We provide a detailed written quotation covering all materials, labour and commissioning. No hidden extras, no vague line items. You know exactly what you're getting before we start.
Step 4 — Installation
Our Bristol engineers install the system with minimal disruption to your business — working around your operating hours where required. All cabling is installed to BS 5839-1:2025 requirements — fire-resistant red mains cables, correct cable segregation and professional containment throughout. Every detector, call point, sounder and visual alarm device is positioned in accordance with the system design.
Step 5 — Commissioning
Once installation is complete, we commission the system — testing every device individually, verifying the control panel response, checking sounder audibility throughout the building and confirming all cause and effect programming is correct. BS 5839-1:2025 requires that wherever possible the designer witnesses system testing — our engineers are the same people who designed and installed the system.
Step 6 — Certification & Handover
We issue BS 5839-1:2025 compliant installation certificates and a full commissioning record. We provide zone plans for display at the control panel — now mandatory under the 2025 standard. We walk your responsible person through weekly testing procedures, logbook requirements and what to do in the event of a fault or false alarm.
Fire Alarm Systems We Install in Bristol
The right fire alarm system for your Bristol premises depends on the size and complexity of your building, its use, the number of occupants and the risk profile identified in your fire risk assessment. We'll always recommend the most appropriate system during your free site survey.
Addressable Fire Alarm Systems
The standard recommendation for medium to large Bristol commercial premises. In an addressable system, every detector, call point and sounder has a unique electronic address — the control panel identifies exactly which device has activated, down to the precise location. This dramatically reduces evacuation disruption from false alarms, makes fault-finding fast and accurate, and supports phased evacuation strategies in larger buildings. All addressable systems we install in Bristol are designed and commissioned to BS 5839-1:2025. Fully scalable as your premises grows or changes.
Best for: Multi-floor offices, care homes, hotels, schools, larger retail, warehouses
Conventional Fire Alarm Systems
A reliable and cost-effective solution for smaller Bristol commercial premises. Detectors are grouped into zones — the control panel identifies which zone has activated rather than the individual device. Simple, robust and straightforward to install and maintain. Perfectly suited to smaller single or double-floor premises where identifying the activation zone is sufficient to locate a fire quickly. All conventional systems we install are fully BS 5839-1:2025 compliant and appropriate for the vast majority of small Bristol commercial buildings.
Best for: Small offices, retail units, cafés, smaller commercial premises up to around 300m²
Wireless Fire Alarm Systems
No cable runs required — ideal for occupied Bristol commercial premises where installation disruption needs to be minimised, or for the many listed and heritage buildings in Bristol city centre and Clifton where drilling through original fabric isn't permitted. Modern wireless systems are fully reliable, tamper-monitored and BS 5839-1:2025 compliant. Battery-powered devices with multi-year battery life. A wireless system can typically be installed in a fraction of the time of a wired equivalent — with no mess, no redecoration and no structural work.
Best for: Occupied premises, listed buildings, heritage properties, refurbishments, temporary installations
What BS 5839-1:2025 Requires for New Fire Alarm Installations
BS 5839-1:2025 — which came into force on 30th April 2025, replacing the 2017 edition — introduced specific new requirements for fire alarm installation that every Bristol business owner and facilities manager needs to be aware of when commissioning a new system.
Red Fire-Resistant Mains Cables — Now Mandatory
All fire alarm mains cabling must now be fire-resistant and coloured red. Non-fire-resistant cable — even if mechanically protected — is no longer compliant under BS 5839-1:2025. Every CJS installation uses correct fire-resistant red mains cable as standard. If you're upgrading an existing Bristol system, cable compliance must be assessed as part of the works.
Zone Plans Mandatory at Control Panel
Up-to-date zone plans showing the layout of all fire alarm zones must be displayed at the control panel. No longer optional — this is a mandatory installation requirement. CJS produce and laminate zone plans as part of every Bristol installation. They must be kept current whenever the system is modified.
Smoke Detectors in Sleeping Areas
For any Bristol premises with sleeping accommodation — hotels, care homes, HMOs, serviced apartments — smoke detectors are now required in all sleeping areas. Heat detectors are no longer the recommended device type in rooms where people sleep. This applies to new installations and must be considered in upgrades.
Competent Design Required
BS 5839-1:2025 now formally requires that fire alarm systems are designed by a competent person — and wherever possible, that the designer witnesses commissioning testing. CJS Fire & Security carry out design and installation with the same Bristol-based engineers, ensuring genuine competency and continuity throughout the project.
False Alarm Notice Label
A new label — "FALSE ALARM NOTICE: This fire alarm has an active connection to the fire and rescue service" — must be displayed on or adjacent to the control panel. Required on all new Bristol installations from April 2025.
Installation Certificate Required
A BS 5839-1:2025 compliant installation certificate must be issued on completion of every new installation. This certificate is what your insurer and Avon Fire & Rescue Service will ask for as evidence that the system was installed correctly. CJS issue compliant installation certificates on every Bristol project.
"A fire alarm system installed correctly to BS 5839-1:2025 is not just a legal requirement — it is the difference between an alarm that works in a real fire and one that doesn't."
