    Bristol's Trusted CCTV Installers

A well-designed CCTV system does two things: it deters criminal activity before it happens, and it provides clear, usable footage when something does go wrong. The difference between a system that achieves both and one that fails at the critical moment usually comes down to how it was designed and installed.

CJS Fire & Security install IP CCTV systems for commercial premises across Bristol and the South West. We design every system around the specific layout and risks of your building — not a one-size-fits-all package. Every camera is positioned for maximum coverage, every recording system is configured correctly, and every client gets a full walkthrough of how to access and use their system before we leave.

We cover everything from small retail units needing two or three cameras to large commercial sites requiring multi-camera IP networks with remote monitoring. All installations are fully compliant with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Types of CCTV Camera We Install in Bristol

The right camera for your Bristol premises depends on what you need to monitor, the lighting conditions, the distances involved, and whether you need covert or visible deterrence. We'll specify the most appropriate cameras for each location during your free site survey.

    Most Popular

    Dome Cameras

The most widely installed camera type for commercial interiors across Bristol. Dome cameras are discreet, vandal-resistant and provide a wide field of view — ideal for reception areas, retail floors, offices and corridors. Their compact housing makes it difficult to determine the exact direction the camera is pointing, adding an extra element of deterrence. Modern IP dome cameras deliver full HD or 4K resolution with excellent low-light performance.

Best for: Offices, retail, reception areas, corridors, internal spaces

    External Use

    Bullet Cameras

Long, cylindrical cameras designed for outdoor use and longer-distance monitoring. Bullet cameras are highly visible — which makes them an effective deterrent — and are typically used to cover car parks, perimeters, entrances and external areas. Built-in infrared night vision provides clear footage in complete darkness, and weatherproof IP66-rated housing ensures reliable performance through Bristol's wet winters.

Best for: Car parks, building perimeters, entrances, external areas

    Large Areas

PTZ — Pan, Tilt & Zoom

PTZ cameras can be remotely controlled to pan, tilt and zoom across a wide area — making them ideal for monitoring large open spaces with a single camera. Operators can track movement across a car park, construction site or large retail floor in real time. Many modern PTZ cameras include auto-tracking, which follows detected movement automatically without any operator input. Highly effective for sites with a manned security presence or remote monitoring centre.

Best for: Large car parks, warehouses, construction sites, wide open areas

    Vehicle Tracking

    ANPR — Number Plate Recognition

Specialist cameras designed to capture and read vehicle number plates at entry and exit points. ANPR systems automatically log every vehicle visiting your premises, generate alerts for blacklisted plates, and integrate with access control systems to automate gate or barrier operation. Essential for commercial car parks, logistics depots, industrial sites and any Bristol premises where vehicle access control is a priority.

Best for: Car parks, industrial sites, logistics depots, gated access points

    High Security

    Thermal Imaging Cameras

Thermal cameras detect heat signatures rather than visible light, making them effective in complete darkness, heavy rain, fog or smoke — conditions where standard cameras fail. Used for perimeter protection on high-value sites, they can detect intruders at far greater distances than conventional cameras. Ideal for outdoor perimeter security on industrial and commercial sites across the Bristol area where conventional detection isn't sufficient.

Best for: Industrial perimeters, high-security sites, outdoor detection in low visibility

CCTV & UK GDPR — What Bristol Businesses Need to Know

Installing CCTV on your Bristol business premises isn't just a security decision — it's a data protection one. CCTV footage that captures identifiable individuals is personal data under UK law, which means your system must comply with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018, and the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025. Getting this wrong can result in ICO enforcement action and significant fines — up to £17.5 million or 4% of annual worldwide turnover.

    Register with the ICO

Most businesses using CCTV are required to register with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and pay the annual data protection fee. This applies to virtually all commercial CCTV systems that capture footage of identifiable individuals — including cameras covering entrances, car parks and public-facing areas.

    Display clear, compliant signage

UK GDPR requires that anyone entering a CCTV-monitored area must be clearly informed. Signage must be visible, state who operates the system, and indicate where to find your full privacy notice. Generic "CCTV in operation" signs no longer fully meet current ICO requirements.

    Limit footage retention

Only retain CCTV footage for as long as necessary for the purpose it was captured. For most Bristol commercial premises, 28–31 days is a standard retention period. Footage must be stored securely, on password-protected and encrypted systems, with access restricted to authorised personnel.

    Respond to subject access requests

Any individual captured on your CCTV footage has the right to request a copy of images featuring them. Under UK GDPR you must respond within one calendar month, providing footage free of charge with third parties appropriately redacted.

The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025

This legislation came into force in June 2025 and introduced updates affecting CCTV operators — including clearer subject access request procedures and enhanced safeguards around AI-based surveillance and automated decision-making in video analytics systems. If your system uses any form of AI analytics or facial recognition, additional compliance obligations apply.

Key Legislation for Bristol CCTV Operators

    • UK GDPR (retained from EU GDPR post-Brexit)
    • Data Protection Act 2018
    • Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 (in force June 2025)
    • Protection of Freedoms Act 2012
    • ICO Surveillance Camera Code of Practice
